Overview

Dr. Tomas Argyros has spent years trying to outrun the ghosts of Fallujah. A decorated Marine officer turned elite heart surgeon in Chicago, Tommy has rebuilt his life through medicine, marriage, and the fragile belief that healing can overcome trauma. But when his wife Karen-a brilliant transplant surgeon-is killed in the crash of a donor-heart retrieval flight under suspicious circumstances, Tommy’s carefully reconstructed world collapses. Soon afterward, Tommy survives an assassination attempt that reveals a terrifying truth: Iraqi insurgents connected to the Fallujah campaign have targeted former Marine officers for revenge, and Karen’s death may not have been accidental. Tommy is forced into hiding in the Greek islands under CIA protection where he assumes a new identity as a sailing skipper in the Aegean Sea. But exile offers little safety. When Tommy and former Greek naval officer are kidnapped by insurgent networks, wartime agendas, once again confront the violence he hoped medicine had erased from his life.

Spanning Chicago, Dublin, Athens, Baghdad, and the Aegean Sea, the novel explores trauma, loyalty, sacrifice, and the difficult search for redemption after war.
